Red Bull Erzbergrodeo: 1% Finisher Rate
The Erzbergrodeo, the pinnacle of hard enduro and the most grueling race in the world.
I have challenged it six times so far.
In my first and second attempts, I didn't understand the course or the flow of the race, and I was blocked by traffic, unable to even demonstrate my true ability.
On my third attempt,
I brought in a touch of the "cunning" not typically used in Japanese races and a fierce determination to push forward at all costs, giving everything I had.
Even then, I didn't reach the finish line.
It was only on that third attempt that I truly realized just how difficult this race is.
The confidence I had held until then was reset, and I was painfully made aware of my position in the world.
"Was I too late to realize it?"
Such regrets sometimes crossed my mind.
Even so, I decided to re-train my physical strength, technique, and mental fortitude, and to take on the challenge again and again.
On my fourth attempt, my results were worse than my third.
On my fifth attempt, my machine submerged five minutes after the start, and that was the end of it.
On my sixth attempt, having overcome numerous difficulties, I set a new personal best, but I still couldn't finish.
However, this race evolves every year.
The course, as well as the riders, continue to raise the bar year after year.
Simply growing myself is not enough.
I must leap over the evolution of the world.
For me, a "challenge" is
the pressure for endless growth, the nourishment, and the source of my passion.
And so, my challenge continues—
