What makes the Fastback stand out is undoubtedly the "ankle frame" placed around the ankle. So, what exactly does an ankle frame do? In short, it prevents "twisting." The ankle frame allows for vertical movement of the ankle while controlling lateral movement. This means that normal pedal operation during riding and walking when dismounted are possible, while protecting against sprains and fractures caused by "twisting" in accidents such as falls.
A pivot is a rotational axis, and by placing this rotational axis at the ankle part of the boot, the ankle can move. The metal screw at the ankle acts as this axis, and together with the attached plastic part, it is called the "pivot system." The biggest advantage of adopting a pivot system is the control of ankle movement. The design of the pivot system dictates the degree of control, which in turn affects the balance between protection and maneuverability (as protection increases, maneuverability decreases). Models that prioritize protection are Gaerne's top-of-the-line boots, the SG-12 and SG-22, while the Fastback prioritizes maneuverability.
When it comes to manufacturing boots, Gaerne is particularly meticulous about the sole manufacturing method. The sole manufacturing method not only greatly affects comfort but also significantly impacts protective performance. Gaerne's competition boots employ the traditional Northern Italian manufacturing method, the Norwegian welt construction, also known as "Norvegese," which is said to last 100 years. A major advantage of the Norwegian welt construction is its extremely high sole rigidity. This method has been a focus of Gaerne's founder, Mr. Gazzola, since the company's inception, and it can only be created with the skill of artisans. This is also why Gaerne's boots are still made in Italy.
These are handmade products, crafted one by one by artisans in the Gaerne factory in the Veneto region of Italy.
