GAERNE
HERITAGE
Changing, yet enduring.
The origins of Gaerne lie in mountaineering boots.
Before founding Gaerne, Mr. Gazzola worked as a shoemaker crafting mountaineering boots. During wartime, he is said to have produced sturdy hiking boots to help soldiers traverse the harsh mountainous terrain of the Alps.
Later, when his son became passionate about off-road motorcycling, Mr. Gazzola applied the expertise he had cultivated in making mountaineering boots to adapt a pair of boots for motorcycle use.
From mountaineering boots to boots for off-road riding.
That was the beginning of Gaerne motorcycle boots.
As times change, so do boots.
When Gaerne was first founded, there were two distinct categories: hiking boots and motorcycle boots.
Both were boots designed for long-term use, crafted from thick leather using traditional manufacturing methods.
However, as time went on, the functions required for each evolved in different directions.
Amidst this, Gaerne shifted its focus toward more specialized, high-performance motorcycle boots.
In time, hiking boots and work boots disappeared from the lineup,
and Gaerne grew into a brand dedicated to motorcycle boots.
However, the techniques and philosophies behind them did not become a thing of the past.
The traditional manufacturing methods. The thick leather that envelops the foot.
And the nature of boots that, through continued wear, evolve into a tool uniquely suited to the user.
Rather than leaving tradition in the past, we adapt it to the times,
carrying it forward so that these boots can continue to be worn.
Reflecting on our original collection from the time of our founding, two boots were born.
FUGA
An iconic design born from function
The prototype for the FUGA was a mountain boot from our original collection.
To adapt it for motorcycle use, the lacing was significantly offset from the center to prevent the laces from interfering with the gear shift lever. Furthermore, we added a leather shift guard to the left boot.
These changes were all made for riding a motorcycle. Yet, in pursuing these functional requirements, a unique asymmetrical design was born.
While retaining the vestiges of a mountain boot, it evolved into a look that makes the FUGA recognizable at a glance. By changing, the FUGA acquired its own distinct personality.
"FUGA" is an Italian word meaning "escape" or "departure."
Sometimes, it’s good to leave where you are. A motorcycle gives you the time to do just that.
We want these boots to be worn during those moments. That is the sentiment imbued in the name FUGA.
No. 145
Small changes to keep things the same.
The prototype for the No.145 is a work boot that was once part of the Gaerne lineup.
While the FUGA transformed into a unique form by adding functional features, the No.145 retains almost the same design as the original, perfected work boot.
By adding a shift guard to the left boot.
Through that small change, a boot built for work was reborn as a boot for riding motorcycles.
The somewhat unusual name "145" comes from the project number of the original work boot. We thought, why not just use that as the name? It was from that simple, unadorned idea that it came to be called the No.145.
By continuing to wear them, they will remain.
FUGA and No.145 breathe the spirit of traditional boot-making, cultivated by Gaerne through years of crafting mountaineering boots.
Wrapped in thick leather with a leather lining, they are finished one pair at a time in our Italian factory using the Norwegian welt construction method, which stitches together the upper, the insole, and the outsole.
The more you wear them, the more the leather conforms to your feet, and the creases, scratches, and changes in luster create a unique character for every pair.
They don't just grow old; they become a companion to the wearer.
The Gaerne tradition, while evolving in form, continues to be worn today.
